Wholesale Fresh Turmeric Root
Fresh turmeric is a different ingredient from the dried powder. Where the powder is dusty, earthy and slightly bitter, the fresh rhizome is bright, carrot-like and faintly peppery, with a color that is genuinely startling. Juice bars, wellness menus and modern Indian and Southeast Asian kitchens all buy it fresh for that reason.
Selection
Turmeric looks like a smaller, thinner ginger with tan skin and vivid orange flesh. Look for firm rhizomes with taut skin and no soft or shrivelled ends. Snap one: the interior should be moist and intensely colored. Pale, dry interiors mean old stock.
It Stains Everything
Curcumin is a powerful dye. It will permanently color cutting boards, plastic containers, aprons, grout and hands. Kitchens handling turmeric at volume should use gloves, glass or stainless containers, and a dedicated board. This is not a small inconvenience — it is worth planning for before the first case arrives.
Storage
Hold at 50–55°F, dry and ventilated, for several weeks, or refrigerate at 34–40°F wrapped to prevent moisture loss for two to three weeks. Fresh turmeric freezes well and grates cleanly from frozen.
In the Kitchen
Grated into curry pastes, rice, dals and pickles; juiced with ginger, citrus and pineapple; simmered into golden milk; or shaved raw into salads for color. Curcumin is fat soluble, so turmeric delivers more flavor and color when bloomed in oil than when added to water.
Nutrition
Fresh turmeric provides curcuminoids, manganese, iron and vitamin B6 in culinary quantities. Fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free.
